Meta's Dr. Zero Shows Where AI Search Is Heading
Meta's Dr. Zero trains search agents with no human-written data. Here is what that means for how customers will find your business.
Most people still picture AI search as a chatbot answering a single question. That picture is already out of date. In January 2026, Meta Superintelligence Labs and the University of Illinois published Dr. Zero, a framework for search agents that improve themselves without any human-written training data.
As someone who runs a one-person company on governed AI agents, I read research like this through one lens: what does it change for the businesses I build for?
How Dr. Zero works
Dr. Zero pairs two models. A proposer invents hard, verifiable questions. A solver tries to answer them by running searches over several rounds, reading results and reasoning across them. The solver's success or failure feeds back to the proposer, which then writes tougher questions. Round after round, both get sharper.
The striking result is that complex research behaviour emerged on its own. Nobody hand-taught the agent to break a question into parts, search for each piece and cross-check sources. It learned that because it worked.
Why this matters for business owners
The cost of building capable research agents just dropped. If an agent no longer needs expensive human-labelled data to get good at searching, expect many more of them, from big platforms and small startups alike.
That means your customers, partners and investors will increasingly meet your business through an agent that has done the research for them. The agent will not skim your homepage once. It will search, compare, verify and then decide whether you are worth mentioning.
The new standard: be easy to research
Agents trained this way reward three things:
- Clarity. Direct answers to real questions, stated plainly.
- Structure. Content and data a machine can parse without guessing.
- Verifiability. Claims backed by consistent facts across your site and the wider web.
Vague marketing copy fails all three. An agent that cannot confirm what you do will simply move on to someone it can.
What I am doing about it
This is exactly why I built AEO Bob, our answer engine optimisation tool. It audits how AI systems see a website and fixes the gaps that stop agents from understanding, trusting and citing it. Dr. Zero is not a threat to that work. It is confirmation that it matters more every month.
If you want to know how ready your site is for agent-driven search, run an audit at AEOBob.com or book a consultation.
